The Lay of Havelok the Dane
For those fascinated by old legends, I ran across one I hadn’t heard of before, in a blog post about a 13th century legend of the founding of the English town of Grimsby.
It is the story of Grim, from Denmark, who saved the life of the heir to the Danish throne and brought him to England.
The heir, Havelock grows up to be the strongest man in England and ends up marrying the daughter of the English King. Later he retakes his throne in Denmark back and he and his wife rule both.
Anyway, some see similarities to the legends of King Arthur and the Wikipedia article points to direct connections between the legends, and so I thought I would point the curious to the following sites:
- News for Medievalists Article
- Wikipedia Article on Havelock The Dane
- The Grim & Havelock Legend Website (Excellent)
Very interesting info!
